Topic: Tapping the Positive Power of Criticism
One topic that has developed a bad reputation over the years is giving and receiving criticism.  While criticism is an integral part of our everyday lives, few people have received any formal training on how to deliver it effectively or benefit as the receiver.  We will examine criticism and touch on some of the essential skills for delivering criticism more effectively so it will benefit the receiver.  After all, when clients "complain", isn't that criticism?  The topic has great appeal despite its terrible reputation because it affects all of us on and off the job.

Dr. Deborah Bright is the founder and president of Bright Enterprises, Inc., a consulting firm whose sole mission is the design of human technologies for enhanced performance.  Sought-after for its expert-driven, customized presentations, workshops, and licensed programs, Bright Enterprises includes in its list of ongoing clients Disney, JW Marriott, GE, Morgan Stanley, New York Presbyterian’s Cornell Medical Center, SAIC, the New York Stock Exchange, Raytheon, and ITT – to name but a few.

Once ranked among the top ten U.S. women divers, Deborah Bright’s career in platform and springboard Olympic competition ended suddenly when doctors discovered retinal tears in both eyes.  Were she to continue, blindness would be the inevitable result.  Deborah then used the experiences of her years in competitive diving as the foundation of her insights into the architecture underlying individual performance.  In the years that followed, she emerged as a nationally recognized expert in the fields of stress management, communication skills, management and leadership development, and the intangible ingredients behind exceptional performance.

Besides appearing on national television and radio, including top talk shows and Bloomberg Radio, Dr. Bright frequently appears as the keynote speaker at national conferences and meetings of business executives sponsored by the American Management Association, World Business Council, the Young Presidents Organization, Entrepreneur’s Organization, Ernst and Young Entrepreneur of the Year, the Family Business Forum, and The Executive Committee (TEC).

In addition to speaking professionally at major conferences, Deb custom designs licensed programs for major companies like NYSE, IBM, Chase, and ITT.  Furthermore, she facilitates meetings where she helps to bring out the best in teams and inspire them to achieve greatness.

Deborah’s sports background has helped her train athletes from the PGA, LPGA, the U.S. Tennis Association, and Major League Baseball teams.  She also works closely with the Professional Golfers’ Association of America and Tournament Players Clubs, helping professional golfers to improve both competitive focus and management skills.  Off the greens, Deborah coaches executives one-to-one on how best to lead in today’s rapidly changing business environment.

Deborah Bright received her doctorate in education from Arizona State University and is a member of the American Institute of Stress.  As a best-selling author, Deborah has published numerous books, including the best-selling Creative Relaxation: Turning Your Stress into Positive Energy, Criticism in Your Life, Gearing Up for the Fast Lane: New Tools for Management in a High-Tech World, and The Official Criticism Manual.  She has also developed a media program on giving and receiving criticism featuring Jayne Meadows and Steve Allen.
