METROCON17 Expo & Conference Gives Back to the Architecture & Design Industry

September 20, 2017

The METROCON17 Expo & Conference Committee, which is made up of 22 enthusiastic volunteers representing several associations focusing on the built environment, was thrilled to present the Keynote Award honoring Sandy Chilewich and Joe Sultan during their Keynote Address, which took place at Dallas Market Hall on August 11th.

On their behalf, METROCON donated $1,000 to the Interior Design Educators Council (IDEC), whose mission is the advancement of interior design education, scholarship, and service. IDEC President-Elect Hepi Wachter, ASID, CAPS, LEED AP, and IDEC Southwest Regional Chair Kristi Gaines, PhD, IIDA, Allied ASID, accepted on IDEC’s behalf.

According to Wachter, IDEC Southwest Region graduate student members will use the funds as a travel stipend to attend either the IDEC Southwest Regional Conference in Dallas this October or IDEC’s Annual Conference next March in Boston. “This award will certainly give more IDEC student members access to these educational events,” he added.

METROCON17 Presiding Chair John DuBard, IIDA, CHID, LEED AP, believes Sandy Chilewich and Joe Sultan, the energetic husband and wife team behind the global company Chilewich | Sultan LLC, are perfect representatives of the spirit of the award: “Their story is one of innovative thinking and obstacles interwoven with hard work and perserverance, ultimately leading to remarkable success. What could be more motivating to students than that?”

Acting as Creative Director and CEO, respectively, Sandy and Joe oversee the design, manufacturing and distribution of a wide range of products sold through various distribution channels around the world. Sandy and Joe have created a global brand recognized for exquisitely beautiful, high performance products – which include wallcovering, flooring, floormats, placemats, table runners, upholstery, and window coverings – made almost exclusively in the U.S.A. Together, they touch and influence spaces where the world dines, works, shops, heals, and lives.

METROCON17 Expo & Conference Champions Collaboration Within the Built Environment

September 12, 2017

On August 10 & 11, Dallas Market Hall buzzed with interior designers, architects, facility managers, real estate professionals, contractors, design students and other essential industry members catering to the built environment when it hosted METROCON17 Expo & Conference.

The event, which is the largest not-for-profit, self-produced, volunteer-driven, design specification-focused regional expo and conference in the USA, attracted individuals from 35 states besides Texas, as well as four Canadian provinces.

This year marked the event’s 15th anniversary, which the Committee of 22 dedicated volunteers celebrated, along with two other milestones:

  • For the first time, five associations joined forces to plan and execute a more expansive METROCON for their members and beyond: the Texas & Texas Gulf Coast Chapters of ASID (American Society of Interior Designers); the Dallas Chapter of CSI (Construction Specifications Institute); the Dallas Chapter of NEWH (The Hospitality Industry Network); and the Texas Chapter of USGBC (U.S. Green Building Council).
  • Companies secured 53 event sponsorships, more than any other year in the event’s history.

With the five partnering associations working together to create such a valuable opportunity for the region, METROCON is symbolic of what is happening with the industry in terms of the increasing need for multi-disciplinary collaboration within the built environment.

Design at Dallas Market Center

August 02, 2017

Dallas Market Center, the home of METROCON Expo & Conference, is the largest and most successful design center in the U.S., welcoming thousands of interior designers to its global trade events in addition to hosting more than 2,000 members of the design community each month visiting an unequaled collection of open-daily showrooms. Design showrooms at Dallas Market Center currently serve a discerning design community actively seeking new resources for residential and commercial projects across the U.S. and Latin America.

In addition to Total Home & Gift Markets, the market center hosts a full calendar of design events throughout the year in partnership with organizations including ASID (American Society of Interior Design), TAID (Texas Association of Interior Design), and IDS (Interior Design Society). In 2017, Dallas Market Center will host 20 design events during non-market time periods, the largest of which welcomes more than 600 interior designers.

In June, Dallas Market Center celebrated the Phase One Grand Opening of the new Interior Home + Design Center, a 220,000-square-foot marketplace with open-daily interior design resources from leading manufacturers. The addition of the Interior Home + Design Center to the already existing home décor showrooms on campus, is part of a long-range strategic initiative to provide enhanced value to home décor companies by serving market-time attendees as well as the growing number of customers conducting business at Dallas Market Center on a daily basis.

IHDC also includes a 36,000-square-foot shared showroom space, The Gallery at the Interior Home + Design Center, where designers can easily source a selection of home décor lines in one space. Phase Two of the redevelopment will include the addition of new lines as well as exterior renovations and will culminate with a celebration in the fall. Sandy Chilewich & Joe Sultan Announced as METROCON17 Keynote

March 01, 2017

We are thrilled to announce that the METROCON17 Keynote Address will be delivered by Sandy Chilewich and Joe Sultan, partners in life, work, and innovation, and the dynamic duo behind the global company Chilewich | Sultan LLC. Acting as Creative Director and CEO, respectively, Sandy and Joe oversee the design, manufacturing and distribution of a wide range of products sold through various distribution channels around the world under the Chilewich brand.

After co-founding, building and eventually selling the successful legware company HUE®, Sandy founded Chilewich LLC. She saw early success with her RayBowl® when the MoMA Design Store began selling it in 1997. After her original creations were granted utility patents and won numerous awards, in 2000 her studio team started a transformative textile revolution when they began designing and producing products with their exclusive, proprietary textiles.

That same year, Joe, an architect focusing on housing and community facilities, moved his practice into the same walk-up NYC townhouse as Sandy’s studio, and proximity bred collaboration. While she was producing woven placemats, table runners, floormats and totes utilizing extruded yarns, Joe became interested in their potential use as wall-to-wall flooring. As an architect, he realized just how perfect it would be for the contract market.

Joe quickly began developing a cushion that could be bonded to the fabrics and made suitable for commercial use. In 2001 Joe and Sandy launched their first line of w2w and tile flooring called “Plynyl.” Over the next three years, Joe split his time between Chilewich and his architecture firm, but became increasingly invested in Chilewich, with all of its products and operations. In 2004, Joe sold his practice and joined Chilewich LLC full time; hence the name change to Chilewich | Sultan LLC to reflect their emergent business partnership.

Sandy and Joe have created a global brand recognized for exquisitely beautiful, high performance products - which now include wallcovering, upholstery, and window coverings - made almost exclusively in the U.S.A. Together, they touch and influence spaces where the world dines, works, shops, heals, and lives.

At METROCON17, the entrepreneurial couple will inspire the audience with details of their company’s evolution, as well as their involvement with Be Original Americas, the non-profit committed to informing, educating and influencing manufacturers, design professionals and individuals on the economic, ethical, and environmental value of authentic design while preserving and investing in its future.

More associations. More collaboration. More METROCON for 2017.

December 11, 2016

As the business of shaping the built environment demands enhanced teamwork and cross-disciplinary partnerships, so does the planning and execution of METROCON Expo & Conference.

We are thrilled to announce that the following associations have joined forces to bring you a more meaningful, expansive event for 2017: (in alphabetical order) ASID Texas Chapter, ASID Texas Gulf Coast Chapter, CSI Dallas Chapter, NEWH Dallas Chapter, and USGBC Texas Chapter.

CSI is a national association of more than 10,000 volunteers, including specifiers, architects, engineers, contractors, facility managers, product representatives, manufacturers, owners and others who are experts in building construction and the materials used therein. The active CSI Dallas Chapter focuses its energy on professional development, knowledge building, networking, and community outreach.

NEWH is the premier networking resource for the hospitality industry, providing scholarships, education, leadership development, recognition of excellence, and business development opportunities. The thriving NEWH Dallas Chapter is dedicated to scholarship and networking for its 500+ members working in the hospitality, foodservice, senior living and related industries.

USGBC is committed to transforming the way our buildings are designed, constructed and operated through LEED. With roughly 1,200 members working as architects, interior designers, landscape architects, engineers, consultants, and more, the diverse USGBC Texas Chapter helps to advance spaces that are better for the environment and healthier for all.

ASID is a community of 25,000+ designers, industry representatives, educators and students committed to all sectors and aspects of interior design. Combined, the energetic ASID Texas and ASID Texas Gulf Coast Chapters represent almost 3,000 members who strive to advance the interior design profession and, in the process, demonstrate and celebrate the power of design to positively change people’s lives.

Each chapter is providing promotional support and volunteer leaders who are devoting their time to work together to bring value to their respective members and beyond.

METROCON Expo & Conference exists to offer the best in exhibitors and continuing education to the region’s built environment community, and this multi-association collaboration promises to expand the show’s reach geographically, attract a more diverse audience, and make for a richer, more valuable experience for all involved.

An Even Happier Networking Happy Hour

May 31, 2016

It’s a sad fact, but our Committee realizes that some Dallas-Fort Worth employers will not allow time off for you to attend a full day - let alone two days - of METROCON. However, you can probably figure out a way to wiggle out of work a little early, right? If you can, then we have an opportunity for you to still network with your peers and keep your boss happy…

Show up to Dallas Market Hall with your business card during our Networking Happy Hour taking place between 4:00 PM - 6:30 PM on Thursday, August 11, and you can get into the Happy Hour without paying the $10 on-site fee and without registering. It’s quick, it’s easy, and it’s perfect for those of you who like to wait to the last minute to make a decision. A con is that if you decide you want to come back on Friday to walk the show, continue your conversations, and/or take some courses, then you’ll need to register on-site and pay the $10 fee after all.

HERE’S A TIP: If you can stand to plan ahead a little, then your better bet is to officially pre-register online between June 1-August 5, 2016, so that you can attend both days of the trade show for $0. Plus, pre-registering online will get you a badge and a complimentary drink ticket to use at the Happy Hour, while your business card will not. We're just sayin'.

So plan NOW to be in Dallas August 10 & 11, 2017, for incredible career- and business-building opportunities with members of our regional built environment.

No Excuses Not to Attend METROCON16

February 28, 2016

If our past $25 trade show attendance fee for those who were not members of ASID or IIDA has ever held you back from participating in the show, then you have no more excuses for not attending METROCON Expo & Conference on August 11 & 12, 2016.

The METROCON16 Committee of Volunteers is pleased to announce that it has waived the non-member trade show fee for this August’s 2016 show, so anyone and everyone can attend both days of the trade show for $0 as long as they pre-register online between June 1-August 5, 2016.

This means that members of AAHID, AGC, AIA, ARIDO, BIFMA, BOMA, CMG, CoreNet, CRE, CREW Network, CSI, IALD, ICAA, IDAL, IDC, IDEC, IDS, IDSA, IES, IFDA, IFMA, IREM, NAHB, NAR, NARI, NEWH, NKBA, NTFA, OFDA, TEXO, USGBC, WE, and more - as well as those working in the built environment who are not affiliated with any trade or professional group - are welcome to join us for industry networking, learning, and career building.

So help us spread the good news: tell your colleagues, co-workers, and collaborators. Looking forward to seeing you - and them - there!
